چکیده

Background The term ‘‘jaundice’’ was used as early as in the ancient Greece when Hippocrates described an illness probably corresponding to a viral hepatitis. However, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century AU :1 when a form of hepatitis was associated to an infectious disease occurring in epidemics and the term ‘‘infectious hepatitis’’ was established. Later on in the early 1940s two separate entities were defined: ‘‘infectious’’ and ‘‘serum’’ hepatitis, and from 1965 to nowadays the different etiological agents of viral hepatitis have been identified. Although all viral hepatitis are infectious the aforementioned terms refer to the mode of transmission, corresponding the ‘‘infectious’’ entity to those hepatitis transmitted through the fecal-oral route and the ‘‘serum’’ hepatitis to those transmitted parenterally. Thus, the infectious or enteric hepatitis include two types: hepatitis A and hepatitis E, which will be reviewed here.

Enteric hepatitis viruses

Hepatitis viruses are infectious agents that can infect liver and cause inflammation. The infection triggers immune response against infected cells that leads to the destruction of hepatic cells. This destruction has two consequences: leaking ALT and AST liver enzymes which increases during the course of disease and accumulation of bilirubin- a red pigmented compound released from dead red cell...

Human and Animal Viruses in Food (Including Taxonomy of Enteric Viruses)

In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of food-borne diseases worldwide, with viruses now recognized as a major cause of these illnesses. The viruses implicated in food-borne disease are the enteric viruses, which are found in the human gut, excreted in human feces, and transmitted by the fecal-oral route. Many different viruses are found in the gut, but not all are recogni...

Applicability of Bio-wipes for the collection of human faecal specimens for detection and characterisation of enteric viruses.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether gastroenteritis viruses and other enteric viruses could be detected in faecal specimens collected with Bio-wipes. METHODS Faecal specimens, self-collected with Bio-wipes, from 190 individuals (94 diarrhoeal, 93 non-diarrhoeal, 3 unknown) were screened for eight human enteric viruses (enterovirus, hepatitis A virus, adenovirus, astrovirus, norovirus GI and GII, s...

Thermal Inactivation of Enteric Viruses and Bioaccumulation of Enteric Foodborne Viruses in Live Oysters (Crassostrea virginica).

Human enteric viruses are among the main causative agents of shellfish-associated outbreaks. In this study, the kinetics of viral bioaccumulation in live oysters and the heat stabilities of the predominant enteric viruses were determined both in tissue culture and in oyster tissues. A human norovirus (HuNoV) GII.4 strain, HuNoV surrogates (murine norovirus [MNV-1], Tulane virus [TV]), hepatitis...

GIV noroviruses and other enteric viruses in bivalves: a preliminary study.

We evaluated the presence of the enteric viruses: norovirus, adenovirus, enterovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A virus, and hepatitis E virus in bivalves using nested PCR methods and cell culture assays. Noroviruses GII.4 and GIV.1, adenoviruses types 1 and 2, hepatitis A, and echovirus type 7 were detected in the shellfish tested, which were often co-infected. This is the first study to detect su...
